Dental Implants

Do you deal with the inconvenience and discomfort of missing teeth? Have you tried dentures only to be disappointed by a poor fit, dietary restrictions, and unpredictable shifting and movement?

The solution to both of these problems is dental implants, a replacement option that looks, feels, and functions the most like a natural tooth. At A Family Dentist, we can replace a single missing tooth with an implant crown or several missing teeth with a bridge or implant-supported denture.

How Does a Dental Implant Work?

You may have heard a lot about dental implants, but you may not know what it is that makes them unique. Instead of bridges or dentures that sit on top of your gums and fill the open space left by a missing tooth, a titanium implant is placed surgically in your jaw and acts as a replacement root.

These are the facts you need to know:

  • A dental implant consists of three pieces – the implant post, a connector piece called an abutment, and the restoration that restores function and appearance.
  • The dental implant is placed in your jaw by an oral surgeon, then left to heal for several months.
  • As the implant heals, it integrates with surrounding bone and tissue, from which it gains its strength.
  • After healing, the abutment is secured to the implant, and a restoration is attached to it to complete the process.

Why Are Dental Implants a Good Choice?

Dental implants are not only considered the standard of care for missing teeth, but dentists also refer to them as “the gold standard” because of the many functional and health benefits they offer.

  • Stability – Hate dentures that slip and slide? We can place implants along your jaw then customize a denture with attachments that we secure to the implants. In some cases, we may be able to retrofit existing dentures.
  • Long-term oral health benefits – Without natural tooth roots to stimulate supporting structures, the volume of your gums and the density of your jaw diminishes. This can cause changes in your facial shape, further tooth loss, and other oral health problems.
  • Restored chewing function – Dentures are an excellent option for many people but only restore about 20 percent of chewing function. Adding dental implants to a denture provides stability and restores about 70 percent.

Is a Dental Implant Right for You?

Specific criteria determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for dental implant placement such as the need for enough dense bone in your jaw. If you are looking for a dental implants dentist in Sun City Center, FL, who can answer your questions and guide you through the decision-making process, please call A Family Dentist to arrange a commitment-free consultation with Dr. Nguyen or Dr. Anthony.
